Your article is very informative Alison! Your right, there is a lot of things that people don't think of when they bring home a new dog. It's like bringing home a baby...kinda!

Dogs are basically everyone's best companion.....they're always happy to greet you when you're back at home. Good way to relax as well and put a little smile in your face.

I think a child should have to earn the pet by proving he/she is responsible enough to handle a pet. They should prove that they can keep their room clean for a month, get their homework done on time without being asked, etc. to show that they are ready for the responsibility.

Cats. I have small children and pets.

Dogs have to be trained, otherwise they're a bother to everyone and kids don't always have the wherewithal to stick to agreed training measures. (I have a 9 year old who laughs when our Golden Retriever jumps up and bites her bum, she thinks it's funny... I don't!)

But cats are furry, independent, they scratch or run under the bed when annoyed, and if you get one with a decent temperament they're fairly tolerant. They don't need a lot of care. Feed them and give them a bed to sleep on and they're fine.

I can't believe your title!

I have been referring to my kittens as my teenage HOOLIGANS because that is what they are!

At least they have stopped playing ping-pong at 3am nowadays and sleep most of the time, just like teenagers do.

My favorite breed is the Terrier group, with Jack Russells and Wirehairs being my faves - lost a wirehair recently after a fight with a much bigger dog. She definitely didn't just lie down and die - she fought like a dervish for many minutes. Unfortunately I was not present (just had it described to me). She died because she drowned in her own blood. Loved that dog greatly, and would have another in a heartbeat. They simply ARE NOT quitters.
