Owning a horse is a big commitment and you must keep them happy at all times. Do you think you’re doing a good enough job at the moment? Here are a few areas you should focus on if you want to keep the smile on their face and we’ll look at why they’re so important.
Look after their teeth
You look after your teeth because you want them to look great. Horses don’t have anyone to impress, but it’s even more important their teeth stay healthy otherwise it could have serious health implications. Once their teeth are compromised it could stop them from eating properly. They would end up suffering from drastic weight loss and they could even get colic. Make sure your horse’s teeth get checked at least once per year and sharp teeth should also be smoothed out when needed.
Search for parasites
They say horses live longer these days because of the parasite control programs we have available and a horse should be put on one when they’re still young. Once a horse starts having parasite problems they will get worse over the years. Once they suffer a certain amount of damage it won’t be able to get reversed and they’ll be stuck with problems for the rest of their life. The only real solution is to make sure you look after them properly right from the start.
Let them roam free
Horses aren’t meant to be trapped indoors all day. This also applies to older horses, which is a shame because some do get trapped indoors because of their age and the only thing wrong with them is weakness due to lack of room to walk around. Even if you don’t go riding every day you should leave them to roam in their field for as long as possible. They will thank you for it and as an added bonus they’ll stay healthy for a lot longer.
Lots of veterinary visits
In sports they say the key to a good defense is a good offense. The same is true when looking after your horse and they must see the vet on a consistent basis. You can’t just wait until something is wrong because they will end up with a lot more problems. If the vet can treat things early it will stop them from getting to the stage where problems become serious. Make sure they see the same vet if possible because it’s easier for them to spot things when they’re used to the same horse.
Feed them good food
It’s not enough to feed your horse any old food. You need to make sure your feed them correctly so they get enough vitamins, minerals, and calories in their diet. It’s impossible to state exactly what they’ll need because this will depend on things like their age, activity level, and general health. Your horse’s needs will always change so you must take this into consideration. I know quality food will be more expensive, but it should be your only choice if you can afford it.
