With summer on the doorstep, it’s time to start thinking about the safety of your pets, and everything starts with keeping them cool.
Plenty of water
The first and most important tip for keeping your pets cool during the summer is to ensure they have enough water. Just like people, pets tend to need more water when it’s hot. If your dog spends a lot of time outside, you might want to put ice cubes in his water bowl to help keep the water cool.
Made in the shade
If your dog or cat is an outside pet, make sure it has plenty of shade. A nicely ventilated dog house is the best choice, but anywhere your pet can get out of the sun will do. That might be a nice, shady tree, a covered patio, a space under a deck or underneath a piece of furniture.
While having shade outside for your pets is a good idea, keeping them inside may be an even better idea. Of course, you will have to let your dog out to go to the bathroom, but otherwise, you may want to keep him in if it is extremely hot. Limit any walks to early in the morning or late at night to avoid the heat of the day. If you have a pet that normally stays outside, you might consider letting him in for the hottest hours of the day.
Beating the heat with style
Another way to keep your dog cool during the summer is to take him to the groomers to get trimmed. Some breeds of dogs have heavy coats that are more suitable to cooler weather and can cause them to overheat when the summer temperatures are high. When getting your dog trimmed, be sure to leave at least an inch of fur to protect against sun burn. If you have a cat with a heavy coat that spends a lot of time outside, you might consider giving him a trim as well.
Don’t leave your pet cooped up in hot places
You should never leave your pet in a hot car for any extended period of time. If you are going someplace that doesn’t allow your dog, then don’t bring him along. You also should avoid leaving your animals in a garage that’s not ventilated, and never put them in a small space, such as a pet carrier, in a garage or outside in the heat.
