A love of animals and the desire to change your lifestyle are two reasons to consider becoming a pet sitter. For dog and cat lovers alike this may seem like a dream job, but for many, becoming a professional sitter is easily within reach.
For anyone thinking of taking this route, the first thing I’d mention to them is the responsibility involved. As I said, a professional pet sitter may seem like a dream job but the reality can sometimes be quite different. Dog walks in the wind and rain, a lot of animal waste and a messy house are just a few things to consider before commuting yourself to this job.
But as with most things worth doing, the upsides will by far out weight the downsides. As I’m sure you can imagine, these upsides can include hugs with our beloved furry friends, a reasonably relaxed lifestyle and the opportunity to meet fellow pet lovers.
But enough about the ups and the downs. How can a job like this become a reality? Well, with a bit of commitment, hard work and good intention it can be an extremely simple business start up, especially when compared to some of the more complicated and risky businesses out there.
Let’s look at a few things you’d need to be a Dog sitter. A couple of leads, a couple of cages, some Dog food, treats, toys and balls are all you really need to get started looking after one or two Dogs. You do need insurance (and for good reason) but this can be acquired from a number of insurance companies quickly and easily.
Of course you’d need to plan out a few Dog walks and routines but once this is done and the items are purchased you’re pretty much ready to go!
Then comes the main part of the service – finding clients. I always recommend starting out by asking friends and family to spread the word about your new service (this works especially well in small towns). You can also get business cards and flyers printed for a very small sum on the internet these days. Most people will get their first few clients this way and can then move on and expand once they’re comfortable.
The internet makes expansion and exposure a task that’s a lot easier these days than it used to be. Websites like Facebook, Gumtree, Craigslist, Twitter and local classified sites make advertising your business quick, easy and free, and if you do happen to have some spare capital, advertising on search engines like Google is just as quick and easy.
Now I don’t want to pretend that the whole process is as easy as it’s been to read this article. As I’ve mentioned you do need to be committed and prepare yourself for some hard work – especially at the beginning, and I admit I have simplified the whole process for the sake of a short article – but with a bit of passion and commitment you could find yourself running your own business doing something you really love.
