If you are like the millions of people living in a small apartment it may be difficult to decide on what type of pet will suit your needs. Obviously the biggest drawback to apartment living is the amount of space you have and as a result your apartment size will dictate what type of pet you should choose.
Of course dogs are always a popular choice for a pet no matter where you live but it is important to consider the size of dog you are going to be getting. Larger dogs generally require quite a bit of room to live and play in so if your apartment is very small then a smaller dog is probably your best option. It is also important to remember that you will need plenty of outdoor area for your dog to play so if there isn’t anything like that nearby then a dog might not be the best choice.
If you’re not a dog person or have decided that you just don’t have the space for a dog there are plenty of other good options available to choose from. Cats are, once again, a very popular choice because they are very affectionate but don’t require as much space as a dog. Most cats require little room and don’t necessarily need to be taken outside like dogs so they make great apartment pets.
If dogs and cats aren’t enough for you then why not consider something more exotic. Many people have found that smaller pets such as reptiles, guinea pigs, mice, and even birds make great pets. Each of these pets will require something different from you as an owner but they should all have no problem thriving in even the smallest apartment. The biggest downside to these pets is that they will not be as affectionate as a dog or cat but they can still be a great pet.
Before buying any pet make sure you do your research. Find out what all is involved in taking care of the animal you are considering and make sure you will have the time and resources to do this. If you want a dog but don’t have access to any outdoor areas such as a park then a dog just is not a good fit for your lifestyle. Research as many pets as you can and odds are you will find something that fits your needs quite well.
